Year 2

In our D&T lessons we have been planning, making and evaluating an improved healthy pizza at the request of Pizza Hut!

First, we had to measure the ingredients suggested in the recipe. Then we had to carefully follow the instructions to make the dough, we left it to rise for a little while whilst we had a break. After that, we rolled out our dough and created the base for our pizzas!

Finally, we headed over to the Food Technology room with our plans and began to add our sauce, cheese and of course, our healthy toppings. We had to be very careful whilst chopping and slicing the vegetables, using the skills we had learned. When our pizzas were complete we popped them in the oven for 10 minutes… they smelt and tasted delicious!

Year 2 have been discovering how to eat healthy and have discovered that not all fruit grows here in the UK because they need a warmer climate and different weather conditions to grow. We tried a variety of imported fruits and used atlases to find each country and continent.

In Year 2 we are learning all about animals and their needs for survival. Yesterday, we had the opportunity to meet some pets! During this enquiry lesson, the children asked lots of questions and found out how to look after two animals in particular, Ruby (the dog) and Lionel (the rabbit). What a fantastic afternoon, learning about our new 4-legged friends!

Last week, Year 2 spent some time learning about the importance of Remembrance Day. We used our learning in English to create poems and our learning in art to create poppies with pointillism (a technique of painting in which small dots of color are applied in patterns to form an image). Year 2 always strive to be creatively and academically fit for life!

This week Year 2 advertised and performed in their own talent show! We had such a variety of talents to showcase, from dancing and singing, to athletic skills, to playing musical instruments. Who knew year 2 had so much talent? Our Christmas production is going to be amazing with such confident and talented children!

Before half term, to round up our learning about the Great Fire of London, Year 2 had some very special visitors from our local fire service! We learnt lots about how fire fighters have changed over time, especially after 1666.

It was great to see such enthusiasm for our History learning. This member of the class visited Pudding Lane where the fire began and climbed over 300 steps to the top of the monument over the weekend. She shared information about her trip to the class with confidence.

The children have planned their fire engines thinking about equipment and materials needed. Now they are busy creating the fire engines.

In our English lessons we have been exploring diary entries during the Great Fire of London. To help us better understand what it was like during this time we had lots of fun re-creating the historical event; trying to escape burning buildings, passing water from the River Thames to save our homes and finally jumping in a boat and finding a safe spot on the other side of the river.
